Sporting activities elsewhere on the day – the Lords Test Match and Wimbledon tennis – attracted a number of potential players from both sides, but nevertheless XLGS were able to field 8 members against a Bluemantles side at Royal Ashdown Forest GC.
As has always been the case, it was a most enjoyable day with plenty of good banter between two sides who have been doing friendly battle for more than 60 years, resulting in many close friendships.
The weather was (relatively) kind with just one light, passing shower. The Bluemantles, led by the ever-young, soon-to-be-88 Ted Rose, just squeezed past XLGS by 2.5 matches to 1.5 to regain the Herbert Hunter Trophy, with Pete Crowcroft and Richard Hodge winning our full point. (See picture above with yours truly handing the trophy over to Ted on the left).
The course was in excellent condition and greatly appreciated by all, particularly if they managed to stay out of the heather (who needs bunkers?!).
Following the game, a discussion was held with the RAFGC office to try to find a date for the match in the future which will not clash with other big sporting fixtures, and hopefully a date at the end of May will be agreed.
