There were 15 fine athletes in attendance at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club, including two guests, to play for the West of England trophy alongside a fun team competition.
The welcome received at the club was second to none with a starter arranging our day, the club staff making sure everyone had sufficient bacon rolls and tea/coffee, and the Club Secretary assisting with the raising of the XLGS flag for the day (although the distinct lack of wind didn’t help with its presentation).
The course at Brokenhurst continues to see a high level of attention to detail from its greens staff with everything being presented well and the greens running true and fast – if you could read them! When talking with club members it is clear to see the level of pride they have in the standards being achieved here which were also reflected in the post-match meal we enjoyed which would not be out of place in a fine dining establishment.
Playing in 5 x 3-balls the team competition of best 2 scores was won by Captain Steve Barton’s team of John Morrissey and his guest Peter White with 86 points. There was a nearest the pin prize on the 12th hole which was won by Ian Edwards.
However the main event, which was for the West of England trophy, saw a repeat of 2022 where Harry Page came runner up with a fine 42 points only to be pipped by a stunning score of 45 points from John Morrissey. Certain parts of the membership did query John’s country of birth and his suitability for large wide-brimmed headwear!
All in all this event has it all with easy driving access, comfortable tee times and excellent value when compared to some other venues, but low numbers remain a concern for the Committee who commend it to everyone in the hope that we can return to something in the region of 24 players that we have seen in the past.
