Match Report XLGS vs Army Officers GS on July 2nd at Worplesdon

Having just about dried all clothes and equipment from Tuesday’s deluge at Denham I arrived early on parade at Worplesdon for the match with the Army Officers keeping a close eye on the weather. Local traffic problems led to my having to tee off first as Captain without knowing if our team was complete. The Army Officers, as one would expect, were all present and correct and looking very organised, comprised as they were of at least one General and a Brigadier. I need not have worried, Vice Captain Greet took control of the situation and all the morning pairings were played on schedule. Both teams had a good balance of new faces and stalwarts of many years making for an excellent day of golf. The Forty Club managed to edge the morning foursomes 3 1/2 – 2 1/2 with some unexpectedly high scores recorded.

We were joined at the excellent Worplesdon lunch by ‘Whispering’ Tony Lowe which was as always was a convivial affair, punctuated by a few words from our own Colonel Defriez and the opposition General. The stage was set for the afternoon. Could the Forty Club follow up from such a good start, questions had been asked recently about afternoon stamina?

I’m very pleased to report a resounding afternoon result of 5 – 1 in favour of XLGS giving rise to an 8 1/2 – 3 1/2 victory overall.

We sat long into the evening with tea and sandwiches, enjoying the embers of a beautiful summers day, having played on a great course, in great company. In the words of many of us – what more could you ask for!
