We gathered at the Garth Hotel in Granton on Spey and had a drink to remember Dougie Adams who passed away this time last year. He is sadly missed by all Forty Club members but particularly those who were lucky enough to be part of his many successful tours to Scotland.
Boat of Garten was looking spectacular as usual with the snow-capped mountains of Aviemore in the background. The air temperature was slightly cooler than last year as was the result, with Boat winning 3–0!
At Nairn the following day, the 5◦ temperature felt even cooler with a northerly wind and rain. The Captain and Esto were fortunate to be paired against the Captain of Nairn, Joanna McDonald, and Mike Davies, a Member of the XL Cricket section who had just returned from playing in the over 60s Cricket World Cup in Chennai. Sadly, they both proved to be rather good golfers and overpowerd the Captain and Esto 2 and 1 despite Esto having played one of the best rounds of golf ever seen! Peter Edwards went round the Championship course in a nett 64 and together with Alan Ewart won their match 2 up. Unfortunately, the final result was 2–1 to Nairn.
The following day the temperature was the same but the wind had picked up to gusting around 40 miles an hour (a typical Spring Day at Hayling!) with a little rain thrown in. This was no problem to the new recruit to the Scottish Tour, David Blackmore, who successfully carried the Captain round for a half point. Unfortunately, the final result was 2.5–0.5 to Brora. The result was quickly forgotten as we enjoyed the hospitality in the bar afterwards, being looked after by Brora Past Captain Kenny Lorimer.
Tain on the final day had equally difficult weather conditions.Standing on the raised tee box at the signature hole 11 ‘The Alps’, the question going through most XL players was could we get the ball off the tee box! The final result was 1-2 to Tain.
The Captain received the Sir Len Hutton jug.
