Match report XLGS vs Rye GC

The auguries were not good. In all my years of running this match we had never been rained off. This year it looked very likely, with extraordinary high winds as well.

The Thursday afternoon was cancelled and it was decided that we would revert this year to a one day match, to be played on the Friday.

Ten intrepid XL members went down rather apprehensively on the Thursday afternoon; the rain was biblical but thankfully the wind had dropped.

This year for the very first time a most splendid Dinner was held in the Clubhouse, accompanied with an equally impressive quantity of wine from the first class wine list and a good number of the Rye side joined us.

Your correspondent was a little nervous in the morning of the results of the previous night’s carousing. However, all was well and the Society held it’s own to be square at lunch. Unfortunately, during lunch the rain returned and both sides (perhaps at last feeling the effects of the night before) lost their enthusiasm for venturing out once more. So the match was declared to be halved.

Despite the shortened match, this extremely popular fixture was much enjoyed as usual, the Dinner in the Club being a lovely addition to the fun.
