MCC Quadrangular Report

Match Report: MCC Quadrangular at Royal St George’s GC on 13th June 2023

6 eager XLGS members assembled late on a perfect summer’s afternoon at Canterbury GC for a warm-up round on this scenic and undulating Colt course. Though a little on the hilly side for some, it was a steal at only £32 for a twilight round. This went some way towards softening the blow of the cost of the subsequent meal and wine at a nearby gastropub which left the Match Manager in no doubt that next time a humble curry house would be a better idea. Then off to the Dormie House at RSG for a nightcap and bed.

Wednesday dawned cloudless with a gentle north-easterly breeze helping to keep things cool. Fortified by a good breakfast we headed out as defending champions to our semi-final meeting with MCCGS. All 4 matches were close and went to at least the 17th green, but we were defeated 2.5-1.5. All talk in the changing room was of opportunities spurned.

The legendary RSG luncheon was then enjoyed. Washed down with many libations.

The 3rd/4th play-off in the afternoon against Band of Brothers (who somehow managed to lose to the Gloucester Gypsies in the morning despite having 6 RSG members in their side!) went the same way as the morning, resulting in XLGS taking home the wooden spoon, unfortunately. But the day was enjoyed by all, irrespective. RSG is a beast of a course even off tees 900 yards short of those used for The Open, but a great experience to play.

We must do better next year, when MCCGS will host. Details tbc but I understand the match will be at Rye. I’ve already booked the Camber Sands Tandoori……
