1st MCC, 2nd Free Foresters, 3rd = Grancogs & XLGS.
A beautiful Thursday afternoon greeted the four teams at Royal Porthcawl last week. Unfortunately the FF’s had a very late cry-off due to Covid but that didn’t affect a wonderful afternoon to play golf on a magnificent course. The breeze was just strong enough to get your attention and, for those without suitable headgear, to get a late summer sun and wind tan!! The FF’s prevailed over the XLGS and the MCC over the Grancogs in two tightly fought semi-finals.
Dinner in the clubhouse that evening was a very convivial affair as usual, with The Grancogs leader bringing to the attention of all of us the marked increase in the numbers present who were still playing cricket. It made your correspondent, and several others, feel very old – but it was good for the match to have a significant number of (relatively) younger golfers playing.
Friday morning dawned with the unfortunate news that two of the XLGS team were unable to play any golf that morning – largely through illness and injury, nothing to do with the night before of course!!
Given that handicap, the XLGS did well to gain a tie against the Grancogs; and the MCC (with some youngish players themselves) did well to retain the Decanter over a number of new faces in a much younger Foresters team.
Congratulations to the MCC (don’t forget to get the decanter engraved again please) and, sad to report, the XLGS were presented with the Wooden Spoon as a result of some subterfuge from the Grancogs. I blame the XLGS MM for accepting it!!
We look forward to next year’s Quadrangular, which will be on Monday & Tuesday, March 21st & 22nd – now where can the XLGS find some younger players??
