On an extremely hot day in the New Forest 17 members along with two guests took to the fairways at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club to compete for the West of England Trophy. Singles stableford was the order of the day and some fine scores were recorded.
The club hosted us extremely well with food and drink before and after the golf in the first week after lockdown rules were relaxed. We were even able to enjoy a cooling shower afterwards, the first time in many a moon.
It was extremely pleasing to welcome David Knight back to the playing ranks after some health issues as he excitedly handed me his card saying “this is the first XLGS card I have handed in for five years”.
Before golf we flew the society flag at Brokenhurst, lowered to mark our respects for the recent passing of society stalwart and immediate past Chairman Tony (AJ) Colbeck as per the heading image.
Being one of the few events that Captain Doug Adams has been unable to attend this year (of those not affected by Covid closures) Doug was capably deputised by his Vice-Captain Pete Crowcroft who, despite the intense heat, stuck to tradition and donned a jacket and tie for the occasion whilst others took a much more casual approach to dress.
Pete was asked to present the prizes as follows:
Best guest: Paul Kennett 31 points (beating Simon Kingsbury)
Runner-up: John Morrissey 37 points
Winner: Seamus Meyer 38 points
Everyone agreed that it was an enjoyable event and voted to continue so without further ado I have reserved Thursday 21st July 2022 on the same terms.
