WELCOME TO THE FORTY CLUB GOLFING SOCIETY
The Forty Club Golfing Society (XLGS) is the golfing section of The Forty Club cricketing club – The XL Club. The Golfing Society was formed in 1956 by a group of XL Club cricketers when on tour in Jersey.
Since then the XLGS has established itself as one of the leading golfing societies in the country, playing at many of the UK’s most famous golf courses every year. Our much envied fixture list includes:
- A Spring and Autumn Meeting at prestigious courses every year..
- Some 40 matches against other well-known Clubs and Golfing Societies played on courses such as Royal Porthcawl, Royal County Down, Royal St. George’s, West Sussex, Hayling, St. George’s Hill, Rye, the 3 “W’s” and many more.
- Annual tours to Scotland (Boat of Garten, Brora, Tain & Nairn), Yorkshire (Moortown & Fixby with Hollinwell en-route), Kent (Royal Cinque Ports & Littlestone) and most recently to Dorset.
Our matches are all about playing in a friendly manner with like-minded company – the result mattering far less than the enjoyment. The matches are a mix of 36 holes foursomes, with a convivial lunch in between, and 18-hole four balls, usually with lunch before or after depending upon the course and the opposition.
The XLGS is open to players of all abilities, usually aged 40 or older as our name implies. However, in order to enjoy the Society to the full, we recommend that you have a recognised handicap given the courses that we play on. Meetings are open to all Members and their guests. Each match or Tour is run by an experienced Match Manager and each year Members apply directly to them if they wish to be considered for selection.
